Gunnar is right, with pedestrians crossing anywhere, at anytime, fearlessly, not paying attention along several hundred feet the opportunity for cyclists to get knocked off their bikes is huge. I've known lots of folks who have been knocked off their bikes by pedestrians stepping off the curb. Either make it a pedestrian mall, put traffic underneath in a tunnel or both--not cheap.
