Upcoming Council Elections

Bike Board, If you had the chance to sit down in a room with all candidates for the City Council election in April, what would you ask them? The Morgantown League of Women Voters offers that opportunity. Is anybody on this list a member of the League? If so, could you advise how we could get them to ask bicycling questions to candidates? I’ve only been to one of League of Women Voters candidate forums but for me it was the best venue to see and hear each candidate’s responses to questions that the League moderator asked. This year’s forum presents us the opportunity both to educate and cooperate with both League members and candidates. We should keep in mind that our questions will be competing with others. The forum will probably be held in early March so please reply to all ASAP with any good questions. Frank

Bike Fix-It Locations: Review Suggestions

Howdy board, We're writing some grants and planning the installation of some fix-it stations around town - maybe 5 or 6 plus one or two at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park. Board, Please review and comment on the proposed bicycle parking amenities included in the Hazel Ruby renovations. In short, plans are to install 10 inverted-U style racks for a total of 20 spaces split evenly in two areas. The two areas are shown enclosed in red boxes on the "site materials" attachment. The racks will closely emulate our bicycle storage ordinance - they are a stainless-steel variant of the typical inverted U, though their "vertical" sections aren't exactly vertical and are not parallel. If possible, please limit your review and comments to only the proposed bicycle parking and not the rest of the site. For the first group I would say that all are good candidates for Sharrows. Baldwin will drop into whatever type of roundabout is chosen for the Univ. Ave/ Collins Ferry Road junction, so establishing bikes there might influence what happens with that design. I used to live on Jones between Grove and North street. Grove is the smoothest connection from Jones to Willowdale. The steep hill up North street from that junction to Jones is pretty sketchy, but definitely necessary to mark North from Jones down to University to make that connection. Cornell is steep, but the best connection from the top of the hill to college ave and right to the downtown campus. All the rest are good choices to connect to other shared lane routes. As for the second group, a lot of these streets connect lower south park to the new bridge to the rail trail and could make a big difference in that area. As for North street, the section from Univ to Jones is necessary. If I was coming from Univeristy up North I might still stay on North to go on out to Willowdale, but if I was coming the other way from Willowdale I would go up Grove, hook back on Jones to north and down to Univ. That hill on North from Grove to Jones is steep, pinched and heavily traveled. East Brockway is a nice connector over to Marilla, I agree getting something in at the top of Falling run will add another piece to the puzzle and maybe get that moving. The last group is probably fine as is. Kirk St (University to Spruce) Spruce St (Kirk to Pleasant St) **East Brockway Ave. (Route 7 to White Ave parking is only near ) Not included in spine network and maybe should stay that way: Listravia Sturgiss St. (below funeral home) Avalon St. Jacobs St. Since we installed the sharrows, we have been hearing from people both within and outside our cycling community that believe they arent going far enough to encourage cycling and the national consensus continues to be mixed on their effectiveness. We havent done any formal studies here so we dont know how they are affecting our environment (Are they increasing the number of cyclists? Are they helping existing cyclists to cycle more frequently or longer distances? Are they increasing motorist awareness? Are they making people feel safer? Are they actually improving measurable safety performance?). We havent received anything but positive reviews of the two bike lanes we installed, both within and outside our community. The cost of both facilities is more than we had anticipated but is roughly comparable and reasonable to include in our plans if warranted. Cost might go down over time as our contractors become used to installing the facilities. Hello, They have some style over the std inverted "U", the stainless will continue to look good with no maintenance and placement looks good, I think the spacing is a little close, between racks 40" instead of 36" would probably allow better access for locking and retrieving bikes, if a double row was installed, for end to end they show 72" with a minimum option of 48", the 48" option would have significant wheel overlap and make it difficult to get to the second row if the first was next to a wall. RE the racks used by WVU, they were made by Wilson Works and I believe were about the same as the proposed racks at $399 each, considerably more than regular steel that is powdercoated which are about half the cost. Most inverted "U" racks are shorter than you would think and most bikes don't have top tube quite as high as on Frank's Trek or Pinarello. It would be nice to see a ground view of the park so we could get a better idea of some of the surroundings. Bike Plan

Kudos to all of you that showed up for last Tuesday's Bicycle and Pedestrian Planning meeting at the Met Theater. More than 70 people participated. Hello everybody, A few quick updates. Drew and I met with four MDS students from WVU todiscuss working on developing a promotional strategy for the new bikeinfrastructure with the goal of having an event in April. This will betheir Senior Capstone project. I saw some of you at the public meetingat the MET Theater last night put on by ALTA, the firm hired by the MPO,City of Morgantown and WVU to work on refining our bike/ped plan. There were surveys at the meeting last night, but they will also beavailable when the site for the project goes live next week. Be sure togo to the site next week, look at the preliminary info and fill outsurveys. Be sure to post info on your social sites to get your friendsinvolved too. I know several folks will not be available for a meeting tomorrow, so wewill cancel. If there is interest in doing a meeting next week pleaselet me know so we can reschedule. It would be nice to get some initialfeedback from our MDS students to review and give them feedback to keepthem from spinning their wheels. I'll be in touch. Chip

trail detoured at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park

Hello all The trail is getting detoured with temporary fencing as construction mobilization starts at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park. During construction, there will no longer be parking in the metered lot across from restrooms. Trail will be be routed behind the depot. Please help spread the word.
