Cycling safety statistics and considerations

Good morning, Just one more thing to pass on and then I'll quit bugging everybody. I was recently reminded of this link to Ken Kifer's website which discusses statistics on bicycling and pedestrian accident/fatality rates. http://www.kenkifer.com/bikepages/health/risks.htm It's a good reminder about where to focus our attention when developing non-motorized amenities that allow all users to share the public roadways safely. Cyclist education is clearly the most effective form of accident prevention. For those who don't know, Ken was killed a few years ago by a drunk driver. This is also a reminder that drunk, inattentive and beligerent drivers - although a very small minority - are beyond the reach of cycling education but should be addressed better in driver education and enforcment. Field Trip Anyone?

Good morning, On July 15 I'll be in Washington DC at the end of riding from Pittsburgh, PA for the National Bicycle Greenway Mayors' Relay. I'll be received by city officials, and in the past that's included DC Bike Coordinator Jim Sebastian (whom I've met on this ride 2 previous years). It may be possible for me to arrange a tour of their bikeshare system which is just coming online this month. Would any of the bike board members be interested in coming up that day to join me for a tour if I can arrange it? Note that this is tentative right now. I should also explain that I have a selfish motive here - I'll be biking all the way from Morgantown and I'm looking to bum a ride back. I'll be happy to pay my share for gas and expenses. Thanks. Mapping questions again...

Hey Steve... Refresh my memory again. You said that you didn't have any maps or specs for what we'll need to put on the Shared Lane Marking map for the bid package. You said that Frank Gmeindl should have a few maps that may be initial drafts/ideas on where we're headed with the SLM mapping? If you do know about any of the formatting, scale, resolution, methods that we should use for this map, let me know. Frank said he'd get me in touch with some of the city folks to see if they know what I'll need to get them. Otherwise, I'm going to start mapping, use my best judgement, and ask questions as we go since I haven't really gotten a clear answer on what we'll need. New sign on Star City Bridge

Bicycle Board Members, There's a new sign at the end of the Star City Bridge coming into Morgantown at the intersection where the CVS is, Boyers Avenue. It is a diamond shaped sign with a symbol of a bicycle in it and below the diamond sign is a left arrow. Does anybody know how that sign got there, who put it there and why it's there? I suppose some well-intentioned official thinks it's a sign directing cyclists to the rail trail but I think it says all bicycles must turn left. Frank

Bike Parking Vendor Literature

Good evening, I just received a comprehensive notebook from Dero Co. (Minneapolis, MN) showing their bike storage products. Everything from lockposts to shelters with trays, hanging racks, custom sculptures in between. I would have brought it to the July meeting but I'll plan on it for the August mtg. Not sure if this warrants time on the agenda. In the meantime it will be at the Positive Spin office for anyone who want to see it.
