Bike Route Mapping Team,
We will have approximately $3,000 left in the education grant budget that must be spent before Sep. 4. I met with Jeff Mikorski today to discuss options. One is to purchase Bike Route signs. Another is to print the Bike Route Map.
Purchasing signs is probably more straightforward. There are standard bike route signs defined in the MUTCD (see attached). We may also want to purchase directional arrows to go with the signs but this would necessitate knowing where the signs will be located. The City both makes and purchases signs. For this task, we probably want to purchase them from a vendor. Damien may be able to give us contact info for a sign vendor that the City has used. Alice, will you take the lead on this? If not, please persuade someone else on the team do take the lead.
Printing the bike route map will probably be more work. Decisions will have to be made on size, format etc. in addition to getting a vendor to do it. Chet, will you take the lead on this? If not, please persuade someone else on the team do take the lead. One possible outcome is a decision that it can't be done on time.
Whatever we do, the products will have to be delivered before Sep. 4.
Let's copy at least the other members of the mapping team on our discussion of these options at least until we make a decision whether to pursue one, the other or some combination of both. Obviously, one factor in our decision will be that we have approximately $3,000 to work with.

To all,
I'm in favor of the signs as we have the map on the web site and the signs will be more visible initially an dmaybe get that program kick started.

I meant to provide this link to the section of the MUTCD that addresses bike route signs: http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/pdfs/2009/part9.pdf . I've also attached figure 9B-4 from that section that shows the signs. We probably need a bunch of D11-1 and M5's and M6's. That section at the link also specifies sign size, where they must be located, etc.

Chip makes a good argument. What does everyone else think?
I can still spec out the printing costs for a couple different sizes. On Aug 8, 2011 6:35 PM, "Frank Gmeindl" frank.gmeindl@comcast.net wrote:

Chet,
Thanks for taking the lead on getting the bike route map printed. Apparently nobody wants to work on getting the signs so it looks like we'll apply our remaining resources to printing the bike route map. Besides determining the sizes, identifying vendors and estimating costs, what else has to be done? On what will you need help? I hope some other members will chip in.

Thanks to Chip, Ryan, Chet and gunnar, we have identified bike route signs and associated directional arrows for all the pleasant (green) and OK (blue) segments of the Morgantown Bicycle Route that is within the City limits, not WVU campus and not state highway. Attached is a list of the signs and their cost.
Thanks also to Chet for volunteering to update the map to include some new segments (Kirk St., Richwood Av. and Sabraton Av.) that we identified when we were laying out the signs.
BTW, in case you forgot, thanks to Ryan and gunnar you can view the Bike Route Map on the BikeMorgantown.com website at http://bikemorgantown.com/route_map.php AND... if you snap the QR code below the map, you can instantly download the map to your smart phone.
We finally have a useful bike route map and I'm sure I'll miss a few but I think we all owe gratitude to the following devoted bicycling supporters that made it happen: * Autumn Bryson * Steve Harrouf * Don Dickerson * Derek Springston * Jacob Brown * Don Spencer * Ryan Post * Alice Vernon * gunnar Shogren * Betsy Shogren * Abe Shogren * Chet Parsons * Hugh Kierig * Jim Rye * Chip Wamsley * Ralph Larue
