Choice number one. The Graber...yes Graber Mighty Mite 6 Bike Rack. This rack retails for $110 and could be anchored to the ground using a bracket or locked to a permanent fixture.
Option number two: Dero MR 12 Rack. This rack is more substantial and would hold 12 bicycles and would be easier to bolt to the ground. Price would be $400.
I would be interested to see if budget dollars could be used for this purpose and or would also be interested in helping put a citizen pool to get one of these racks installed at the school.
There are other options but these two give a good idea of a basic and nicer version of the rack debate.

When it comes to rack design, I advocate for the guidelines the ABPB recommends. There is a good list at http://www.bicyclinginfo.org/engineering/parking.cfm :
* support the frame of the bicycle and not just one wheel * allow the frame and one wheel to be locked to the rack when both wheels are left on the bike * allow the frame and both wheels to be locked to the rack if the front wheel is removed * allow the use of either a cable or U-shaped lock * be securely anchored * be usable by bikes with no kickstand * be usable by bikes with water bottle cages * be usable by a wide variety of sizes and types of bicycle
I will soon be taking action on getting the PS rack to Suncrest Middle School. It was my Alma Mater, afterall, the one where I was not allowed to park my bicycle. Matt's victory is significant, emphasize that to Chelsea.
However, I would like well designed racks to be installed because they encourage bicycle parking. Comb and toast racks really aren't suitable for a school environment.

I was on the advisory committee when WVU installed the new racks, and Jonathan had a lot of information on different racks then. At the time WVU had 2 types: some simple comb deal with a lot of slots closely together, and a really bad design that held the lower portion of just one wheel. I never had much issue with the comb racks, either putting my rear wheel in, or putting my front wheel over (the bike then rested on the underside of the downtube and fork. The combs could hold a lot of bikes closely together. My MTB with fenders wouldn't fit in the smaller combs, but I could lock it on the side of the rack.
The new WVU U shaped racks work well, but they consume A LOT of space and were overly expensive. The useful ones were always full (less capacity than the combs had). The serpentine ones like at the rec center are pretty good, though awkward to overfill so still not able to store say 8bikes on the rack.
In terms of locking both wheels and frame, the comb would require a 6' lock, but I was never that worried about locking more than the frame, and maybe a wheel in Morgantown.

The attached comb rack similar to those in front of Terra Cafe offer the advantage of being able to string a cable lock through the bicycle frame, both wheels and under the horizontal bar on the rack that keeps the wheel from rolling out of the rack. The other comb racks have that bar setting flat on the ground so you can't get a cable around it.
The biggest disadvantage of comb racks is that it's difficult to lock both wheels and frame to them.
Wave racks damage bikes and do not provide sufficient support to keep the bike from getting dinged unless you treat it as an inverted-U rack and lock your bike along the longitudinal axis of the rack but then that limits the capacity to probably 2-4.

I had to have Jen, PS core volunteer, hold the new recycled 80's Miyata I purchased from PS to keep it from falling. Nice bicycle and the essence of what PS is all about; it took me many hours of labor to repair in exchange for an amazing road bicycle with those elliptical chain rings that were popular in the 80's. The point is that this bicycle has wide tires in relation to current standards, but this rack could not keep it upright on its own.

This is kids bicycle with wide tires. It is leaning waiting for an opportunity to fall, probably would work o.k. in a quiet environment, but not in a school environment.

Not the bicycle rack, but this is a photo of all the donated bicycles that have been accruing. Many are donated by Walmart. This is going to be a great opportunity for wrenchers when we open up in April to prepare for our most popular event, Trade-up Day.

Hi All-
My impression from the meeting on Thursday was Matt was supposed to facilitate the delivery of the Positive Spin rack to Suncrest Middle since it was his initiative to begin with. Frank was going to pass on Matt/ Jack's (his father) phone number to follow up with him.
It sounds like the PS rack is available and the Suncrest principal is OK with locating the rack there so we just need Matt to take the initiative. Then, if folks want to raise funds to get a more suitable rack installed later, it can be replaced.
Has anyone made headway on raising funds/ a plan for getting a different rack in place? If not, I'd suggest connecting Matt/ Jack with Damien to arrange delivery of the PS rack.

When it comes to rack design, I
advocate for the guidelines the ABPB recommends. There is a good
list at
http://www.bicyclinginfo.org/engineering/parking.cfm
:
support the frame of the bicycle and not just one wheel
allow the frame and one wheel to be locked to the rack when
both wheels are left on the bike
allow the frame and both wheels to be locked to the rack if
the front wheel is removed
allow the use of either a cable or U-shaped lock
be securely anchored
be usable by bikes with no kickstand
be usable by bikes with water bottle cages
be usable by a wide variety of sizes and types of bicycle
I will soon be taking action on getting the PS rack to Suncrest
Middle School. It was my Alma Mater, afterall, the one where I
was not allowed to park my bicycle. Matt's victory is
significant, emphasize that to Chelsea.
However, I would like well designed racks to be installed
because they encourage bicycle parking. Comb and toast racks
really aren't suitable for a school environment.

I recall there's some urgency in getting a rack installed so Matt can at least ride before he leaves Suncrest MS. The PS rack certainly isn't ideal but could be secured to the concreted with L-brackets. Even if left unsecured it's unlikely that anyone would be able to steal even one bike chained to the rack.
Let's get this rack over there and if Jenny/others can raise money for a better one, then as Emily points out the PS could be replaced- an opportunity for yet another bike recognition news item/ceremony.

Hi All-
My impression from the meeting on Thursday was Matt was supposed to facilitate the delivery of the Positive Spin rack to Suncrest Middle since it was his initiative to begin with.

I am pretty sure everyone knows my stance about this rack. When I attended Suncrest Middle School I rode a bicycle that had thin tires so I would not have been happy with this gift from PS.
However, the reason why I correlated this subject with the Sarris Corral contest at the meeting this Thursday is because this could be a possible opportunity to photograph the toast rack onsite, not that I am advocating we go this route. This is a school that has not had bicycle parking in at least 50 years, so waiting a few more months to locate an appropriate rack would not necessarily be a bad approach. Ultimately, I think this should be Matt's choice, I could arrange to have him check the rack out at Positive Spin.
If he is fine with using this rack, we should make it happen.

It looks like you could probably straddle the whole rack with a bike, and the wheel holder thingy would contact the crank arm or down tube. It's certainly not ideal, but it gets the job done.
Certainly would be nice to get a nice new 'perfect' rack in there, but if it were me, I'd be upset I didn't get to ride today...65degrees!?

However, the reason why I correlated this subject with the Sarris Corral contest at the meeting this Thursday is because this could be a possible opportunity to photograph the toast rack onsite, not that I am advocating we go this route. This is a school that has not had bicycle parking in at least 50 years, so waiting a few more months to locate an appropriate rack would not necessarily be a bad approach. Ultimately, I think this should be Matt's choice, I could arrange to have him check the rack out at Positive Spin.
If he is fine with using this rack, we should make it happen.

There is a good
list at

:
support the frame of the bicycle and not just one wheel
allow the frame and one wheel to be locked to the rack when
both wheels are left on the bike - allow the frame and both wheels to be locked to the rack if the front wheel is removed - allow the use of either a cable or U-shaped lock - be securely anchored - be usable by bikes with no kickstand - be usable by bikes with water bottle cages - be usable by a wide variety of sizes and types of bicycle

When Nick donated this bicycle rack last Fall, I think he was doing it on the assumption that it was required almost immediately, and that it would not be a permanent solution. Also, the PTO would work on details over time. As long as the school recognizes this is only a temporary solution until a more appropriate rack is found, I would say go for it. What I do not want to see happen is that this gets heavily publicized, and every school in the district begins installing toast racks as the standard parking solution. We are behind in just about everything in this state, let us not become behind in bicycle parking standards!

Hi All-
My impression from the meeting on Thursday was Matt was supposed to facilitate the delivery of the Positive Spin rack to Suncrest Middle since it was his initiative to begin with.

Do you want me to see about getting the Positive Spin bicycle rack delivered to Suncrest Middle or should I wait to see if you get enough donations to purchase a new one?

Let's select a rack we can be proud of, then ask around For donations, I'll kick in some and Ask some neighbors. Maybe ask some parents at the school to donate, put up a plaque..
How much do we need, which rack?

Jonathan,
Could you send me a couple pictures of the bike rack at Positive Spin for South Middle. I spoke with Principal Napolillo briefly this morning about getting the rack over to the school and want is going to need to be done once it is there. He had some questions that I couldn't answer since I've never seen the rack. Thanks.

When it comes to rack design, I
advocate for the guidelines the ABPB recommends. There is a good
list at
http://www.bicyclinginfo.org/engineering/parking.cfm
: support the frame of the bicycle and not just one wheel
allow the frame and one wheel to be locked to the rack when
both wheels are left on the bike
allow the frame and both wheels to be locked to the rack if
the front wheel is removed
allow the use of either a cable or U-shaped lock
be securely anchored
be usable by bikes with no kickstand
be usable by bikes with water bottle cages
be usable by a wide variety of sizes and types of bicycle I will soon be taking action on getting the PS rack to Suncrest

Option number two: Dero MR 12 Rack. This rack is more substantial and would hold 12 bicycles and would be easier to bolt to the ground. Price would be $400.
