FYI. The State is having a Regional Transportation Education Session at the Waterfront Hotel next Monday, 15-Oct, 9:30-11:00 am. The meeting will probably give a perspective on the dire financial situation for roadway maintenance and construction but it might also reveal any opportunities for cycling infrastructure.

Local government, business and community leaders from throughout the northcentral region are invited to attend the fourth in a series of regional educational meetings to learn about the challenges facing West Virginia's surface transportation system and to understand what the outlook is for transportation funding. Organizers of the meetings, which are being held in seven locations across the state, include the West Virginia Municipal League, West Virginians for Better Transportation and the West Virginia Association of Counties. Legislators also are being invited to the meetings.

West Virginians for Better Transportation is pleased to announce that First District Congressman Alan Mollohan will be on hand for the October 15 session.
The meetings are designed to educate local and community leaders about the state's transportation system, its current and projected challenges and the financial plight facing the state Road Fund (now and future), said Joe Deneault, Chairman of West Virginians for Better Transportation. "There are more needs facing our state's transportation system than can be met with existing and projected resources," Deneault added. "Local communities all across the state are struggling with the impacts of this situation. Moreover, many communities are going to face greater problems and issues as limited state Road Fund dollars are stretched even further." **
Deneault noted that the Secretary of the state Transportation Department recently reported his agency will need an extra $350 million more a year to meet maintenance and construction needs in the state. In addition, the state has the sixth highest number of bridges listed either as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.

"These meetings are helping to generate ideas/discussions about what long-term solutions may be possible," Deneault said. WVBT plans to prepare a final report on the meetings and share the comments and ideas with Governor Manchin, WVDOT officials, legislators and all of the coalition's supporters and partners.
