I miss Hugh!

Sometimes you don't appreciate what you've got til its gone. Last week, I learned that Clement Solomon is cutting funding for PE172 Cycling Basics after this school year. Today, I went into Mountaineer Station and saw that the Bicycle Parking Room is now the Parking Maintenance Room. Half of the bike racks have been moved outside. No lockers. I can't tell what happened to the other half of the racks. Any ideas how we can get Clement Solomon on board with us? Frank Take paradise and put up a parking lot

Help friend with Stolen Bike...

Hey folks, A coworker of mine who just recently purchased a Specialized Tricross (the same as my commuter's make/model) just had it stolen after owning it a few months. She's been commuting to work regularly and had it locked in a shed near her house. I guess she's outside of city limits, so the Morgantown Police (if I remember right) didn't offer her much help. It was stolen last weekend, August 2nd-4th. She's checked with some of the local pawn shops already. I've recommended to her that she keep checking local Craigslist ads, post it on Mon Bike Club, WVU Cycling club page, Country Road Cyclists page, post flyers at the local Bike shops and anywhere she can around town, and perhaps even some facebook avenues could be valuable. I've attached her flyer to this email, which she prefers us to share openly with everyone you can think of. Do you have any other ideas that could help? Would love to see her get this bike back, especially since she's been such an avid bike commuter. This 3 page article, "Bicycle Law Enforcement - Enforce Laws with Mutual Respect " in the July issue of Law and Order magazine (pp 52-54) could change some biases against cyclists. http://lawandordermag.epubxp.com/title/12194/54 It clearly explains the rights of bicyclists and appropriate and legal riding techniques to maximize safety. This article may offer an opportunity for us to start a dialog with local law enforcement officials to get their support us. Any ideas how we can get them to read it and start a dialog with us? Here's a little tantalizing quote to get you to read the article if you already haven't: "It is safest for bicyclists to stay out of the way: This myth has sadly contributed to the majority of crashes and near-misses cyclists experience. Hugging the edge of the road is actually dangerous for a number of reasons. Most traffic lanes are too narrow to safely accommodate a motor vehicle and cyclists side by side. Cyclists who keep right so motorists can pass them without changing lanes actually encourage close passes and sideswipes. . ." and that was written by a law enforcement officer! 4ank

Bill, Please find the Bicycle Board's submission. Attached is an Excel workbook. It contains 2 worksheets. The first worksheet contains the Bicycle Board's scores for LRTP Tier 1 project feasibility, mobility, preference and priority. The second worksheet contains the Bicycle Board's scores for the 36 intersections listed in LRTP Project 38 - Intersection Capacity and Safety Improvement Program. The second spreadsheet also includes 3 additional columns: Danger Rating; Signalized?; and Comments to help understand the Bicycle Board's scores as well as to provide intersection improvement recommendations. Invitation to the Steering Committee of the MPO Regional Bike Plan

Bicycle Board Members, The Morgantown Monongalia MPO is working on the Regional Bike Plan (Plan) as recommended in the recently adopted 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). Morgantown Bike Board members are cordially invited to participate in the steering committee for the Plan. The purpose of this committee is to * Provide guidance and direction for the Plan * Identify the interests of bicyclists in the area * Cultivate visions, goals, and criteria for the Plan * Review reports prepared by MPO staff * Monitor the planning procedure and public outreach process As an integrated part of the LRTP, this Plan promotes a logical and interconnected bikeway system for the greater Morgantown metropolitan area, with shared values and visions originated from the LRTP. The Bike Plan will be building on the work the Bike Board has already done and is recommended for funding with forecasted available state and federal funds in next two decades. MPO technical Advisory Committee and Citizen Advisory Committee are to function as advisory committees to the steering committee, providing technical support and citizen feedback. To extend the scope of the steering committee, MPO is seeking representatives from neighborhoods beyond the Morgantown city limits. Your recommendation will be gratefully received.
