Good morning, Just one more thing to pass on and then I'll quit bugging everybody. I was recently reminded of this link to Ken Kifer's website which discusses statistics on bicycling and pedestrian accident/fatality rates. http://www.kenkifer.com/bikepages/health/risks.htm It's a good reminder about where to focus our attention when developing non-motorized amenities that allow all users to share the public roadways safely. Cyclist education is clearly the most effective form of accident prevention. For those who don't know, Ken was killed a few years ago by a drunk driver. This is also a reminder that drunk, inattentive and beligerent drivers - although a very small minority - are beyond the reach of cycling education but should be addressed better in driver education and enforcment. Field Trip Anyone?

Good morning, On July 15 I'll be in Washington DC at the end of riding from Pittsburgh, PA for the National Bicycle Greenway Mayors' Relay. I'll be received by city officials, and in the past that's included DC Bike Coordinator Jim Sebastian (whom I've met on this ride 2 previous years). It may be possible for me to arrange a tour of their bikeshare system which is just coming online this month. Would any of the bike board members be interested in coming up that day to join me for a tour if I can arrange it? Note that this is tentative right now. I should also explain that I have a selfish motive here - I'll be biking all the way from Morgantown and I'm looking to bum a ride back. I'll be happy to pay my share for gas and expenses. Thanks. Mapping questions again...

Hey Steve... Refresh my memory again. You said that you didn't have any maps or specs for what we'll need to put on the Shared Lane Marking map for the bid package. You said that Frank Gmeindl should have a few maps that may be initial drafts/ideas on where we're headed with the SLM mapping? If you do know about any of the formatting, scale, resolution, methods that we should use for this map, let me know. Frank said he'd get me in touch with some of the city folks to see if they know what I'll need to get them. Otherwise, I'm going to start mapping, use my best judgement, and ask questions as we go since I haven't really gotten a clear answer on what we'll need. New sign on Star City Bridge

Bicycle Board Members, There's a new sign at the end of the Star City Bridge coming into Morgantown at the intersection where the CVS is, Boyers Avenue. It is a diamond shaped sign with a symbol of a bicycle in it and below the diamond sign is a left arrow. Does anybody know how that sign got there, who put it there and why it's there? I suppose some well-intentioned official thinks it's a sign directing cyclists to the rail trail but I think it says all bicycles must turn left. Frank

Bike Parking Vendor Literature

Good evening, I just received a comprehensive notebook from Dero Co. (Minneapolis, MN) showing their bike storage products. Everything from lockposts to shelters with trays, hanging racks, custom sculptures in between. I would have brought it to the July meeting but I'll plan on it for the August mtg. As I've stated before, I am interested in helping with GIS mapping and analysis for the Bike Board, but it seems like there are several of us who are interested or have already been mapping. Resignation letter

Good evening, I just wanted to let everyone on the board know that I resigned tonite. I'm leaving on the best possible terms, and I want to thank all present and past boardmembers for your passionate commitment to making Morgantown a better cycling community. This has made it a pleasure to work with you. My decision was somewhat spontaneous. We were discussing a slate of 3 qualified applicants for 2 positions on the board. My resignation made it possible to recommend them all without taking a vote. I see this as a good thing - as director of Positive Spin my second favorite thing (next to teaching young kids to ride for the first time) is seeing other citizens working together in an effective board as they grow into community leaders. It makes my decision easier that Positve Spin needs more of my attention and there are only so many hours in a month. The coming months will be critical for building our board so that to continue filling the unmet need we've tapped at the grass roots. It will need to be strong and self-sustaining to help Morgantown meet the 80% reduction in vehicle miles to avoid climate disaster. Thank you for your passion, enthusiasm and leadership in the past. Good luck to all the board -old and new- as you make the future. And don't hesitate to call anytime I can offer technical, logistical or menu advice. Agenda for this Thursday's (6/5) BB meeting

Bicycle Board Members, Please find attached a zip folder that contains 6 documents: the agenda for this Thursday's meeting; minutes of our last meeting; our procedural guidelines; and 3 documents relevant to our goals. In reviewing our procedural guidelines, I noticed that while Bicycle Board member term of office is 3 years, officer (Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary) term of office is only 1 year. I, Don Dickerson and Betsy have been the officers for way over a year so I put officer election on the agenda. Also I must say that while reading through the items in the Purpose section of our procedural guidelines, I felt very proud that we have held true to those items. While reading through the duties, I also felt very proud of how professionally and thoroughly we have executed them. (We still need to produce a comprehensive bicycle plan, though.) On the other hand, I am terribly disappointed that the City has been practically unresponsive and even resistant to our recommendations and apparently powerless to get them implemented. (Does it really have to take a year to paint a stripe in the middle of the rail-trail down by the pavilion?!) Therefore, when we get to the Goals topic on the agenda, rather than focusing on things we'd like to see done, I suggest we determine HOW to get them done. See you Thursday! Work with regional wellness council to enable, promote, and reinforce active commuting among employees . Help WVU promote bike commuting and promote administration support of alternative transportation by faculty, staff, and students . All goals that pertain to WVU ENCOURAGEMENT . Make cycling more available and inviting to youth and public for fitness as well as transportation . Generate signed bicycle routes throughout the city connecting various destinations in the city . Influence one person to commute by bicycle . Bike route maps for commuters online and/or in print EDUCATION . Our education recommendations to the Traffic Commission are implemented . Children in schools-teach safe riding on roads, streets, and trails INFRASTRUCTURE . Maintain and improve roadways for safer bicycling (especially shoulders and grates) . Traffic calming everywhere . Neighborhood connections: For instance: Krepps, Star City Trail . Woods along the ridge just off the highway above the park OR through the park so families and others don't drive to the river trail to bike Also attached again is the wonderful annual report that Betsy wrote for us to use to review the goals that we previously identified and our progress toward achieving them.
