Ah, such cynicism, Denise - but you're right.
Is there any way we can help change that equation?

Goodwin has close ties to Rockefeller and might be the most reasonable, though unlikely choice. Tennant was asked to run for WV-01 last year, but stated that she wanted to remain in WV because of her young daughter. I believe Tennant wants to be the first female governor of WV. The only questions that need answering are: Who can get the most extraction industry campaign dollars? Whose politics are approved by Manchin? Find those answers and you've got your candidate.

Unfortunately, the single thing that Jorea Marple is known for among most West Virginians is getting fired. While many will sympathize with her, and even feel she got a raw deal, no one knows her positions on taxes, guns, abortion, the environment, or even "education", (whatever that means).
Goodwin is also an unknown, not many remember that he was a US Senator for a few months, and of those who do, the best that they remember about his is "well, he was a caretaker for Manchin, but he did not screw up too badly".
They might be great people, but would need a significant "get acquainted" period with most West Virginians.
The good news is that Earl Ray has announced he would NOT seek the Senate seat. But it is widely expected to be a bruising primary for the democrats, with a lot of contenders, so early name recognition and a positive perception by voters will be important.
What about Natalie Tennant?

We talked about this yesterday at 2 different meetings. One was stating they want Goodwin (Dem party). They other group was a little more worried about Goodwin and was talking about other prospects (more progressive group). None I believe have a good chance, but who knows. None of the people wanted Rahall or believe he could win in the eastern or northern part of the state Caperton and Mollohan both had the names come up. Most had bad idea with Caperton, and most liked the idea of Mollohan.
Also found out yesterday the state democratic party has a lot of internal fighting going on now with several staffers being removed from the office in Charleston. We had several delegates at one of the meetings yesterday.

Does Capito have locks on the seat? Is there a credible Dem candidate?

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/west-virginia-sen-jay-rockefeller-retire-... West Virginia Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller will not seek a sixth term in the Senate, he told Politico in an interviewhttp://www.politico.com/story/2013/01/jay-rockefeller-to-retire-86054.html?hp=t3_3. He will serve through 2014 after more than 25 years in the chamber, "I’m going to serve out my term,†the 75-year-old Rockefeller said. “It was a very hard decision for me. Once it’s made, like any hard decision, it eases up. But it was a very tough decision for me.†Rockefeller joined the Senate in 1985 after two terms as governor of West Virginia. He will make a formal announcement on Friday morning. The senator's retirement could lead to a fierce race in 2014. Democrats have had a lock on the seat since the Dwight Eisenhower administration, and an election without an incumbent could give Republicans a major opportunity in a deeply red state.
