This is from the DOE Shale gas panel that has been criticized as "dominated by industry". While I am not sure that this is entirely valid in all cases, the complaint from the Environmental Integrity Project is that 6 of 7 members have industry ties.
When we went to their hearing in Washington, PA in June, they had tipped the industry folks, who got to speak early. They also clearly indicated that their mission was to determine "how" to produce gas safely, not "if" it could be done at all. Josh Fox stated at the hearing that this clearly indicated that the Commission had already made up their minds that drilling was OK, before they even gathered any evidence.
We certainly want to support those recommendations such as the need for "green completions", but I think we need to go further and indicate that there should be a moratorium, no drilling permits should be issued until these are written into the rules and there is adequate enforcement to assure that the drilling is done right.
