Duane Nichols, a 1959 graduate of West Virginia University, was recently inducted into its Academy of Chemical Engineers. The ceremony was held on April 25, in Morgantown.
Nichols, who completed both his master's and doctorate in chemical engineering at the University of Delaware, was a member of the faculty of Delaware State University, where he served as the first head of the Department of Physics, as well as director of the Nuclear Radiation Laboratory.
In 1968, Nichols came back to WVU as an assistant professor of chemical engineering under the National Science Foundation's Heat and Mass Transfer Enrichment Grant, teaching courses in unit operations, heat and mass transfer, catalysis, applied differential equations and optimization theory. Later, as an associate professor of chemical engineering, he served as coordinator of the NSF program on "The Siting of Coal Conversion Complexes in Appalachia."
Nichols went on to become head of the fossil energy section at the Research Triangle Institute in Durham, N.C. in 1977. The research program, supported by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, was directed at the environmental assessment of coal gasification for synthetic natural gas production.
In 1980 he moved to Library, Pa., first as senior process engineer with the Conoco Coal Development Corporation, which became CONSOL Research and Development, where he was group leader for special projects.
Nichols, who retired in 2000, has served as president of the Cheat Lake Environment and Recreation Association. Projects conducted under his leadership have included the establishment of a swimming beach and improvement of trails and boating on Cheat Lake as well as the conservation of native habitat areas in the Cheat River Canyon. He has also been active as the co-chairman of the Upper Monongahela Area Watersheds Compact and a board member of the Mon-Valley Clean Air Coalition.

Is anyone interested in being listed as the author for he attached Op/Ed? National Sierra Club Staff have been lobbying to extend the Wind Production Tax Credit, which helps make large wind farms more economically viable. The PTC expired last year when it got stalled by budget battles, and we want to thank Sen. Rockefeller for helping to get it out of Committee. I would be happy to sponsor this, but this is a great opportunity to get recognition for newer members. All you gotta do is say "Yes".

Hey Bill and Jim, the DC office is working with chapters to place PTC thank you opeds in state. I'm not sure about the current relationship/politics with Rockefeller. Do you think someone from the chapter would be willing to put their name on it?

Hey team-
Below is the list of senators that we'd like to thank in this PTC op ed<https://docs.google.com/a/sierraclub.org/document/d/1unazqkLBSY3aPWtPjKtqdS…>, as I mentioned on Monday's call. We're hoping to get this letter placed as soon as possible, early next week if doable!
Please take a look at <https://docs.google.com/a/sierraclub.org/document/d/1unazqkLBSY3aPWtPjKtqdS…> the oped<https://docs.google.com/a/sierraclub.org/document/d/1unazqkLBSY3aPWtPjKtqdS…> and at the senators in your regions below, and please see if you can find a local volunteer to sign it-- a staffer would be a next resort.
Then, it would be awesome if you could work with your local contacts to pitch this. If you have too much on your plate, let me know and I can work with you on this part.
Thanks all!

2. Senator Chuck Schumer (NY)

This may be of interest to the Marcellus committee. Is someone able to review these and see if there are best practices we should be asking for in the landfill bill rules?

Subj: Update to EPA Website on Oil and Gas Waste Management
Dear Sir or Madam:
The EPA has updated its existing Crude Oil and Natural Gas Waste website to reflect the latest information on proper waste management from oil and gas production (E&P) wastes, including hydraulic fracturing. Specifically, the EPA reviewed the waste-related provisions of state regulations as of March 2014, for oil and natural gas waste pits and storage tanks for 26 of 33 gas producing states (i.e., states with the most significant shale gas activity). The review examined only the state statutes and regulations and did not include a review of permitting decisions, compliance monitoring, or enforcement actions. In addition, EPA conducted a literature review/internet search and developed a list of more than 80 publicly-available sources of voluntary management practices for oil and gas E&P wastes as they relate to pits, tanks, and land application/disposal. From this list, EPA focused on fourteen key documents/websites that are widely used and developed summaries of the pit, tank, and land application-related management practices contained in the fourteen selected sources. EPA has provided both reviews as a resource for policy makers and operators. If you have any questions, please contact Bonnie Robinson at 703-308-8429, Patrick Kelly at 703-308-7271, or Ross Elliott at 703-308-8748.

What will climate policy mean for
coal?<http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/sciencedaily/top_news/top_environment/~3/bYY…>

Limiting climate change to 2 degrees C means shutting down coal power
plants -- an unpopular proposition for coal power companies. But a new
study shows that delaying climate policies could prove even worse for power
plant owners.
