OK now this is really interesting. It suggests that Acid Mine Water is a major contributor to the problem, rather than gas well brines. That is not to say that gas well brines are harmless, as the spikes in Figures 5 and 6 illustrate that they can be very important locally, but it is helpful to recognize the source of the problem if we wish to solve it.
I also do not want to read too much into these data, but it does appear that there is a significant increase in TDS and sulfates just downstream of the WV/PA border.
