Take Action to Protect Vital Social Programs

The cuts in essential federal funding to the states included in the US House bill to raise the debt ceiling (HR 2811). If enacted, these cuts will do harm to some of West Virginia's most vulnerable. One estimate is that West Virginia alone could lose $8.3 billion in federal funding over the next decade. Many West Virginians would be adversely affected by these drastic cuts in federal funding. Of particular concern to West Virginia are cuts in food assistance and health care that depends on federal grants. HR 2811 would also impose burdensome work requirements on Medicaid recipients and those who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits . If work requirements are enacted for Medicaid eligibility, 21 million Americans overall and nearly 220,000 West Virginians will be at risk of losing their health coverage, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. While work requirements might make good sound bites, we know that work requirements for Medicaid eligibility in Arkansas in 2018 turned out to be counter-productive: 17,000 Arkansans lost their Medicaid coverage within 3 months with no appreciable rise in employment. Contact our Senators and Governor Jim Justice today. Tell them to show their support for West Virginia and the most vulnerable West Virginians by opposing this political gamesmanship that can deprive West Virginians of a more secure and better life. Urge Governor Justice to join other governors around the county who have made voiced their opposition to cuts in essential federal funding to the states and to expanded work rquirements for social programs. The three priorities adopted in the 2022 program were: - Voters service - Social justice - Environmental Protection This year, the Board is recommending only minor adjustments from the program adopted last year. The minor changes were designed to recognize recent local actions and legislative initiatives that deserve LWV observation and action. Three Other Areas remain, not as top priorities, but important enough that LWVMM will be following them and acting as needed. In honor of our LWVWV 2023 convention theme, 'The Fight for Women's Equality, It's Not Over!', we asked historian, author and activist Elisabeth Griffith to join us as guest speaker. We are very grateful that she accepted our invitation. Elisabeth's knowledge and experience in the struggle for women's rights are sure to illuminate and inspire! We realize that there is a problem of inequality not just for women but for so many people for different reasons. Standing on a platform of equal rights when faced with a growing portion of society that is not inclusive of diversity remains a dilemma. The Equal Rights Amendment resolution has failed to advance toward ratification and our next steps are unclear. We face rising forces in American politics that defy reason and bend the traditional ideals of a true democracy. We see our right to vote and the security in its counting being increasingly challenged. The LWV now finds itself as a nonpartisan organization with partisan problems. When there is political opposition at odds with our platform of organizational priorities, how can our voices be heard? What can history teach us about advocacy strategies that work? What we do know at this crossroad in the 21st century is that we must stay true to our LWV mission: 'Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy.' We hope that our listening members and guests will be posing worthy questions in the chat to spur further dialogue with Elisabeth! The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan volunteer organization that encourages informed and active participation of citizens in government. The League does not support or oppose any political party or candidate, but is engaged in local, state, and national issues of importance to our communities. The League works to influence public policy through advocacy and education. League membership is open to all men and women age 16 or older.
