Subject: RE: NOMINATIONS SOUGHT: State Outcome Teams - Climate Recovery Partnership

Jim:

I’m sorry this isn’t clear.  I’m not quite sure how else to phrase this that isn’t in the notice.  This is for teams of state/chapter level folks who will be contributing state-level outcomes in the development of the national plans.  I know this is novel.  We’re used to there being “federal” plans and “state” plans, with ‘national’ Sierra Club writing and executing the former, and chapters writing and executing the latter.  This is about including state level goals in those national plans.  For example, in a Clean Energy Solutions campaign plan, an outcome like “Pass 25% by 2020 Renewable Electricity Standards in at least 15 different states,” would constitute a state outcome; while “Pass a federal Renewable Electricity Standard by 2010” would be a federal outcome.

Please do pay close attention to the qualifications.  We are *not* interested in people who want to simply advocate goals for their particular state.  We are interested in people who can and will think about a ‘nation-wide’ approach – what sort of outcomes and strategies we want across a critical mass of states – outcomes that move us forward as a nation.

As I note at the very beginning, this is open to both volunteers and staff.

I hope this is helpful.

<sorry - thought I was replying to you on last email>

I am confused. Is this a call for nominations of a national team to work on CRP? or is it for state teams? Also: Is this only open to chapters/states with chapter staff? That seemed to be what was said. We have none but we have ambitious plans for state "outcomes" such as renewable energy portfolio standards.

Please help understand - thanks.

Call for Nominations

State Outcome Teams

Climate Recovery Partnership

Deadline: February 13

We are seeking nominations for team members, staff and volunteer, who will play a central role in the development of state-based outcomes for Climate Recovery Partnership (CRP) plans.  These plans will serve as the basis of much of the Sierra Club’s climate and energy work in coming years.  We seek to appoint teams of three to five highly-qualified people for each campaign, representing a diversity of backgrounds and experience.

The work of each team will take place fully within the first half of 2009.  Teams will communicate over email and conference calls, working collaboratively with national campaign teams to create a set of state-level outcomes that complement and enhance the federal-level activity of their respective campaign.

‘Outcomes’ are real-world changes that reduce the amount of carbon pollution, and help to move us toward a clean energy economy.  Examples of ‘outcomes’ are: a) passing state legislation to mandate increased use of renewable electricity sources, b) winning a decision from a Public Utilities Commission to institute decoupling of utility profits from electricity sales, and c) successfully advocating to expand funding for transit.

A pool of funding has been set aside to cover the expense related to chapter staff participation on these teams.

Campaigns

At this time, nominees are sought for the following campaigns:

* Curbing Carbon

* Clean Energy Solutions

* Green Cars, Fuels and Transportation

Learn more about these and all six of the CRP campaigns here: http://clubhouse.sierraclub.org/fundraising/climate-campaign/

Qualifications

Each team will work at a fast pace and under tight deadlines.  Required qualifications include:

* Substantial experience in state and/or local government advocacy and/or organizing.

* In-depth knowledge of the respective policy area.

* Capacity to set aside the interests of their specific state/chapter, and address a ‘nation-wide’ campaign approach.

* Demonstrated capacity to work well in teams, under tight timelines.

* Freedom to devote an average of at least five hours per week to team activity, with peaks of activity at certain times as necessity dictates.

Selection Process

All nomination forms will be reviewed.  The final selection of team members will be decided by Robin Mann (Vice President for Conservation) and Scott Elkins (Director for Chapter Coordination), in collaboration with the lead volunteer and staff member on each campaign team.

Timeline

Nominations are due by Friday, February 13.  Final team selection will be complete by late February.  The work of each team is expected to commence immediately after team selection.
