explore: West Virginia – Hillbillies, Coal Miners, Treehuggers & God

explore travels to West Virginia, where coal is both
a way of life and a destructive force

On April 5, 2010, a massive explosion ripped through Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia, killing 29 coal miners and changing the local community forever.

Now, two years later, the people of the once-thriving town of Whitesville, all have different beliefs about the value of coal mining and what it will take to resurrect the region. But most agree that Marsh Fork Elementary School, sitting below a dam holding back billions of gallons of toxic slurry, is another disaster waiting to happen.

Hosted by documentarian Charles Annenberg Weingarten, this moving half-hour special -- explore: West Virginia - Hillbillies, Coal Miners, Treehuggers & God -- journeys through the heart of Appalachia to meet a community torn apart by disaster fighting to protect the environment and rebuild its way of life.
