Hi, All,

Well, I talked with Dr. Kim Bjorgo-Thorne, our environmental science faculty member and advisor to the Sierra Student Coalition here on Wesleyan’s campus.  Yes, we do have a chapter of Sierra Student Coalition!!!   The students will have a table at the event, but it may be primarily about their own campus activities rather than broad-spectrum sustainability.

But it turns out that she, too, believes the convention is a greenwashing event, sigh.  Apparently, in order to qualify for some of the SIFE competitions, the SIFE groups have to have an environmental project, so organizing this convention is their project.  Well, that’s not all bad, surely, forcing students to do good things.  Even going through the motions can have an impact on people’s lives.  In fact, you never know what will turn on a light bulb in someone’s head, can you?  After all, if they never come in contact with good ideas, how can they learn?

Is there time to get some sustainability materials sent here from national Sierra Club?  Can you check?   If so, they can be sent to me and I’ll make sure the students have them at their table.

But Jim, I thought you’d want to know.  Who knows whether it’s worth your time to come.  If someone does decide to come, my early lunch invitation stands!

Hi, Jonathan and everyone else,

I think that Wesleyan’s Green Club is officially a Sierra Student Coalition.  I  will find out.  If so, perhaps some of the members could “person” a Sierra Club table.  But they may not have any materials.  Does the Chapter have good materials for a table on sustainability?

Thanks, Kathy, my same sentiments.  I sent this information to the WVEC one week ago, and nobody seemed to notice.

Hey, Guys,

I don’t know about any greenwashing!   You may just be washing yourselves out of a good opportunity to educate college students about sustainability.  Take another look at the mission statement of the convention.  It’s to educate folks about sustainability.  I think this is a perfect place for a Sierra Club table filled with our information about sustainability!  I hope someone can come.  I’ll be happy to meet someone for an early lunch, have some good conversation, and help you set up.  Unfortunately, I have another engagement midafternoon to 8 pm, so I can’t offer to join anyone for supper afterwards.

By the way, the faculty advisor, Dr. Scott Bellamy, is a very good man.  I don’t think he would have sent the invitation to Sierra Club accidentally.

I had seen it. It's for businesses, so I don't think it's for WVSC. Actually, I was just slightly suspicious whether there'd be some greenwashing going on...

Dear Environmental Sustainability Professional:

What is your business, organization, or corporation doing to sustain our environment? Do consumers know about your products and or services? Are you looking for a way to market your latest innovations while also trying to remain stable in such a fragile economy?

If so, we, the West Virginia Wesleyan College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team would like to invite you to be a part of the "2009 West Virginia Go Green Convention". This event was established to promote the greening of America's businesses and community through demonstrations of environmental sustainability practices and by exhibiting innovative "green" products, thereby supporting the education and networking of both consumers and producers. This convention has been endorsed by the state of West Virginia because of its vital contribution in keeping West Virginia both, "Wild and Wonderful."

Our SIFE team's commitment to environmental sustainability sparked the development of this convention. We believe that through your support and participation in this convention, we can teach and promote a cleaner, healthier, more prosperous lifestyle.

This convention can be a great opportunity for your company to respond to the ongoing "green" movement happening in America. More and more, customers are choosing products that are environmentally friendly.  Our convention can benefit your organization by helping your business appeal to new customers face-to-face, while also developing networking relations. Furthermore, your organization can impact how consumers buy and think when making future purchases. This convention will also be a great opportunity for your business to gain some news media coverage through supporting the greening of America.

The convention will be held on February 21, 2009 from 12:00- 6:00PM in the West Virginia Wesleyan College Auxiliary Gym. We have enclosed a brochure and all needed application materials with this letter so that you may participate in our event. We ask that your organization please inform us of your decision to participate by February 9, 2009. You can also register online at www.wvgogreenconvention.com. If your company has any questions or comments about the coWenvention, or if you wish to speak with a director, please call Shawn McPherson at 1-304-669-8459 or Samantha Phillips at 1-304-677-8914.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
