Hello all,

I hope this finds you all well.

As stated in early July, serving as a board or commission member requires you to put in time and effort. Several key behaviors can help us to be more effective within these groups such as being familiar with the operating statue and bylaws of your particular board or commission; reviewing the Open Meetings Act, attending meetings and being prepared for them, understanding the role of your board and commission and constraints on the City.

Since the beginning of 2019, when new Morgantown Board and Commission members are appointed by City Council we have invited those new members to participate in a short orientation led by City Attorney Ryan Simonton to discuss topics such as Organizational structure, meeting procedures, Freedom of Information Act, Social Media, Open Governmental Proceedings Act, and the Ethics Act for public officials, to name a few.  During those orientations information is provided to help launch those new Board and Commission members into a successful experience.  In an effort to ensure all members are provided the information, guidance, awareness, etc., that they need to successfully do the job they have taken the oath to do, we are now inviting all members to attend this “All Hands” event.  This event will be held via Webex for all Boards and Commissions members to participate together

To protect public health during the COVID-19 pandemic, personal attendance at this meeting will not be permitted. Members may participate by videoconference at the following link:  https://cityofmorgantown.my.webex.com/meet/cityofmorgantown with meeting number (access code) 793 734 477, or by calling in at the following number 408-418-9388 and using the access code 793 734 477.

While service on a board or commission involves real work, it is also tremendously important and rewarding.  As a board or commission member, you have the chance to interact with other citizens on meaningful issues, participate in and gain new insights into the public policy process, and give back to the community by using your time and talent to make Morgantown a better place.  Board and commission members are strongly encouraged to attend this training, however, we do know that many of you may not have schedules which allow for this flexibility.  Know that it is our intention to hold another meeting just like this one, so please be sure to respond to the doodle poll I sent to each of you the week of July 6 to share with me what may better fit your schedule.  Additionally, if you have any questions or concerns please email me and I will get back with you.

If you see that one of your fellow board or commission members may have been missed on this invite, please forward as appropriate and notify me so that we include them next time.

Lastly, I want to express my appreciation and gratitude for your service, we certainly would not be the city that we are without you – thank you.

Have a wonderful evening.

Christine
