Dear BB members,

I highly encourage you to attend this webinar next Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, 2:00 p.m. — 3:30 p.m.  In it you will learn the FHWA's method for assessing roadways and other bicycle facilities for safety.

Most of the BB's work involves us assessing roadway and other facility safety for bicyclists.  This webinar can increase our competence at that.

I have registered for it but when it is being conducted, I will be in the Navigating MAP-21 workshop in Charleston.  I have missed previous webinars and watched the recordings later but they're not as good.  So, I hope some of you will attend and tell us what you learned from it.

I found this: http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/ped_bike/tools_solve/fhwasa12018/ which is a comprehensive and excellent report on Roadway Safety Audits.  It could be a valuable read-ahead for the webinar.

As I agreed at our last BB meeting, I delivered a presentation on Safe Routes to School to the Green Team last Thursday.  You can see the presentation at https://www.dropbox.com/s/i90rbd4j7b2zg94/SRTStoGreenTeam.pdf .  I also recommended to the Green Team that they learn how to do roadway safety audits.  The RSA webinar offers an opportunity for the BB and Green Team to gain competence together and to collaborate efficiently and effectively to achieve Safe Routes to School.

Looks like a week of beautiful weather coming up so maybe you'll tire yourself out riding and need some recovery that attending the webinar can provide:)

Frank

2:00 p.m. — 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time

This presentation will cover consideration of bicyclists in the Road Safety Audit process and review some successful applications of this process that lead to improved conditions for cyclists.

An RSA is a formal safety examination of an existing or future roadway or off-road facility and is conducted by an independent, experienced, multidisciplinary team. The presentation will describe the content of the Federal Highway Administration's Bicycle Road Safety Audit Guidelines and Prompt Lists, which provide transportation agencies and RSA teams with a better understanding of the safety of cyclists in the transportation system when conducting an RSA.

These guidelines present the RSA team with an overview of basic principles of the safety of cyclists and potential issues affecting cyclists. They also provide information on how to conduct an RSA and effectively assess the safety of cyclists. Prompt lists describe safety considerations when conducting a cyclist-specific RSA. These guidelines will help RSA teams evaluate and suggest a multimodal approach to safety by improving the safety of cyclists and all roadway users.

Speakers include Dan Nabors, PE, a senior transportation engineer at VHB, and Bill Desantis, PE, corporate director for bicycle transportation planning and design at VHB.

PBIC offers free, public Webinars approximately every month. To register for upcoming Webinars and to access archived presentations, please visit www.walkinginfo.org/webinars.
