Bicycle Board Members,

Attached is Chief Preston's memo concerning a "Traffic, Pedestrian, Bicycle safety partnership and campaign".

For bicycling, he says,

·               Bicycle Safety Initiative

o   Following the end of the educational year for Monongalia County Schools, the Bicycle Unit will be re-constituted for full shift work schedules

o   Morgantown Bicycle Officers will be assigned specifically to the rails to trails and downtown areas as part of their regular patrol duties and will enforce all violations as observed.

o   WVU UP will utilize their bike units during the summer months to increase awareness and educational opportunities.

o   Members of the Morgantown Traffic Commission, Bicycle Board and concerned citizens will be allowed to accompany Officers during designated times and locations and can distribute informational pamphlets

·               Driver Safety Campaign

o   Traffic Checkpoints are operated in accordance with State Law and Guidelines established through the Governor’s Highway Safety Campaign.

o   Members of the Morgantown Traffic Commission along with concerned citizens may be allowed to attend scheduled checkpoints and distribute informational literature as appropriate.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?  I for one, would like to ride patrol on the City streets with the bicycle police to help educate.

Frank

Attached is a memo regarding a Traffic, Pedestrian, Bicycle safety partnership and campaign that has been discussed and requested by the Town-Gown Board as well as the Morgantown Traffic Commission.  Chief Roberts and I have both reviewed this document prior to submission and feel that this is the best and most reasonable starting point for such a collaboration and targeted campaign.  Based on the results, the campaign could be extended, expanded or disbanded depending upon the availability of resources and operational necessities.

We can begin operational implementation in January after the students return from winter break.
