Bicycle Board Members,

This is probably our best opportunity to get funding.  Who will go to this workshop in Charleston, Sept. 26?  I have registered.

Our education grant came through these channels.  I'm sure people from at least Charleston, Parkersburg and Lewisburg will attend.  Besides now being our competitors within the State, they could also become our collaborators if we're there.

We could car pool or ride down together.   The last week of Sept. is usually one of the best cycling weeks of the year, IMHO.

Dear Colleague:                                                                                                 July 8, 2013

WV Connecting Communities (WVCC) and the Regional Intergovernmental Council (RIC) are pleased to invite you to a workshop on what the new Federal Highway Transportation Enhancement Program (MAP-21) means to West Virginia and how to successfully utilize the different funding sources for cycling and walking projects. The workshop is FREE and there is a continental breakfast and lunch provided.

Advocacy Advance is a partnership between the League of American Bicyclists and Alliance for Biking & Walking. AA offers MAP-21 Action 2020 all over the country and will be in Charleston, West Virginia on September 26, 2013.   These workshops bring together advocates, agency staff, and elected officials and are designed to ensure that participants have the knowledge, skills and resources to access un- or under-utilized federal funding sources at the state, regional and local level to build bicycling and walking infrastructure and programs.

With a focus on the new transportation bill, participants will learn how to maximize funding in the new Transportation Alternatives program and utilize all MAP-21 funding programs for bike/ped at the state and local levels.

MAP-21 Action 2020 Workshop attendees will:

·       Learn how to maximize funding in the new Transportation Alternatives program

·       Learn how to utilize all MAP-21 funding programs for bike/ped at the state and local level

·       Learn the key characteristics, requirements, and opportunities of these programs

·       Discuss favorable factors for bicycling and walking investments

·       Understand the important role of advocates, agency staff, and elected officials in securing this funding

·       Share knowledge and experiences in the local context, working together to develop a list of local priorities and strategies for funding bicycle and pedestrian projects and programs

The workshop also serves as a great way to meet and socialize with other advocates, agency staff, elected officials, and bike/ped professionals. This provides a priceless opportunity to develop relationships and learn from the successes and avoid the mistakes of other leaders.

Please register directly with AA by going to their website, http://www.advocacyadvance.org/trainings.

The training will take place at the Holiday Inn & Suites in South Charleston. We are still working on the exact start and end time but this is an all-day training so please plan accordingly.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, September 26th. We would appreciate it if you would distribute this invitation to your networks. The more attendees the better!!

Sincerely,

Kasey Russell
