Bicycle Board Members,

Anybody interested in pursuing permission from the Federal Highway Administration to conduct an experiment to apply the Shared Lane Markings (chevrons, sharrows) and Bicycles May Use Full Lane signs?  Let me know.

Richard Meritzer is Pittsburgh's bicycle coordinator.

Once we had all our documentation together it took about 4 months.
PennDOT was not involved. We did this through the FWHA.

Richard,

Can you tell me how long it took you to get FHWA and PennDoT
authorization to apply shared lane markings as an experiment? Here in
Morgantown, WV we expected the new MUTCD would be approved by now and we

could just use it as justification for the markings. Now, it looks like

the new MUTCD won't be approved until the end of this year and the WVDOH

probably won't adopt it until the end of next year. So, we're now
thinking of going the route you did and getting permission to do an
experiment. However, if that's going to take two years, we'll probably
just go with share the road signs.

Thanks for your time and help!
