March 25 is the regular SPAN monthly meeting at which the bicycling event/program may be planned.  From Paul's messages, it appears that SPAN's only requirement is to "... try to get the community involved in a neighborhood event".

I think we can propose whatever we want.  Nick's proposal (repeated below) could be a good fit.

Frank, et al,
I'd be happy to offer any help I can from Positive Spin which would include video presentation, class presentation, practice bikes and riding course materials (markers, signs, etc).  We could structure it like we've done our Safe Routes classes where we set up a practice course for the kids to ride in the main area of the parking lot and have an area to the side for first-time riders who are learning to balance on 2 wheels.  I have this described in a proposal that we usually send out to the schools where we do the classes.  I would recommend that if it's for grade school ages (7-10 years) we do it inside the gym.  If there's adequate interest and volunteers we could have a skills course outdoors for older kids.  The video and class material are pretty much the same for all ages up to high school, since most kids haven't had it.
If anyone else on the board is interested in working together on this I'd be happy to go to SPAN with you on it.

My goal for Positive Spin is to get this material into all schools eventually and this would be a good way to start.  Btw Who is Paul (from SPAN)?

To answer Nick's question, Paul is Paul Steele who represents 2nd Ward on the Traffic Commission.  I believe he is a teacher at North Elementary.  He's the TC member that requested a copy of "Let's Start Biking" when I announced at the January TC meeting that it was complete.

I’m still very confused what is being asked of us.  The March 28 meeting IS the event or it’s the meeting where they plan the event?  If it is the event, I would expect it’s a very brief introduction to cycling safety, likely under 20min. In that case, anyone could do it. (Helmet, hand signals, check tires/brakes, stay out of the road unless with parent).   If it’s intended for Middle School aged kids, I’m kind of at a loss what can be successfully taught in 20min.

The March meeting should be the 28th at 7:30 at the church on the corner of Cobun and Grand. We have never done this before so we were looking to you for advice. We're mainly try to get the community involved in a neighborhood event. If we only need outdoor space we can use the parking lot at M.H.S. If we need indoor and outdoor space we can either use M.H.S. or the church. Our turnout for events like this has not  been very good in the past.If you think it would be best we could have a sign up deadline and cancel if there's not enough interest. We can do whatever you want.

Bicycle Board Members,

At the February Traffic Commission meeting, Commissioner Paul Steele who represents second ward said the South Park Association of Neighbors (SPAN) would like to conduct a "bicycle safety program".  As you can see by the dialog  below, he has invited me to attend their March meeting to discuss it.

WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?

As you can also see from the dialog below, I have asked Paul for more info.  I will forward any response to you.

Paul,

As I mentioned when we discussed this, I will take it up with the Bicycle Board.

When is the March SPAN meeting?

Can you provide any more info about requirements?  For example, what does SPAN expect to be the outcome(s)?  Is this for kids and/or adults?  Do you have any idea how many participants - kids under 14, adults - we can expect? How much time is SPAN allocating for the event?  Does SPAN have a location in mind?

Frank,
We spoke briefly about doing some type of bicycle safety program for S.P.A.N. in the spring.I was going to invite you to the February S.P.A.N. meeting but we already have two speakers attending that meeting so how about the March meeting instead?
