Derek,

Thanks for taking the initiative on this!

Back around February, Autumn brought to the BB meeting a map with bike routes on it.  My impression was that it was pretty near completion.  If you could find that file, it would be a good place to start.

FYI, tomorrow, Don Spencer, Greg Good and I are meeting with the City Manager and the City Engineer for what I hope is the last step to getting shared lane markings (SLM), Bicycles May Use Full Lane signs and Share the Road signs installed around the City.  The attached file lists the locations.  Steve Harouff marked up a paper map that the WVDOH gave us to indicate the locations.  He may have done some work digitizing the locations.  Please coordinate with him.

The purpose of the SLMs and signs is not to establish bike routes but rather to soften barriers to bicycle travel on obvious good transportation routes, e.g. University Avenue.  The reason I bring the SLMs and signs up is that we need to keep an integrated infrastructure perspective so we don't create conflicts and confuse cyclists and motorists.  I would imagine that besides producing a bike route map, we'll want to sign the bike routes so we should have one map, or at least a set of layers, in one file that captures it all.

Hey guys..  As I've stated before, I am interested in helping with GIS mapping and analysis for the Bike Board, but it seems like there are several of us who are interested or have already been mapping.  I think it would be great for us GIS folks to get together and figure out where we are with mapping and who has what.  I would like to start making contacts on who is willing to help with GIS mapping.  Maybe this would be more appropriately brought up at the next meeting?  See you guys next month.  ~Derek Springston
