BOPARC is taking heat when this is not the case-  I have seen the videos of trail users ignoring signs and the photos of vandalism of signs being thrown in the woods and tape torn down.  It is unfortunate that this vandalism is happening but also the quick assumption that notice was not given.  There have been many complaints to fix these trail issues and little patience and understanding when staff are designated to work on it.   Ella

According to Melissa Wiles, Director of BOPARC.
Signage was placed and people have been ignoring it, tearing down the caution tape and using the trail anyway.  We tried to leave signage and tape up last night because there was a two inch drop in the pavement where we are replacing the culvert.  This morning the tape was torn down and the signage had been tossed in the woods.  The truth is that we do not have enough staff members to flag.  We literally have four to five guys out there working on this, leaving only three guys to work on mowing crews this week and next.  We placed the signage at a distance away from the work site because of this.  For safety purposes.

Public notice was made last week, not the same day that work started.  We posted to our website and Facebook page.

Signage was placed at HRM (on the restroom building) on Friday.  Signage was placed at the Good Bridge in Marilla Park on Friday.  I'm sorry - I have not been to HRM so I do not know if that signage is still up, but will check.  The signage placed at Marilla Park was torn down and we have made more signs to put up today.

This is a classic example of the privilege vs the unprivileged that Chairman Drew Gatlin discusses so often at our Bike Board Meetings.

The decision to close the trail was announced literally on the same day that it was closed with no consideration made for commuters or homeless people that use this as their main thoroughfare. There was no signage posted at appropriate areas pointing out that the trail ahead would be closed, nor was any effort made to post a detour route at those same areas, or even have flagman available on the trail, which in this case, would have been the appropriate solution since the real concerns here stems from wanting to avoid trail users having conflicts with heavy equipment during work hours.

This is the equivalent of closing Beechurst and University simultaneously and providing no detours or flagman, which would be the very least that would be expected by motorists. If such a thing ever did happen in this town, you could be absolutely sure there would be a non-stop uproar from motorists, and a call for accountability.

Morgantown can do much better.

FYI...

Some Trail users are ignoring signs and tearing down construction tape across the trail.  Please help spread the work and encourage people to ride elsewhere.

ATTN TRAIL USERS:  The following trail closures will be happening in the next two weeks in order to deal with erosion/culvert issues and replace fencing related to those issues.

August 27th, 28th, 29th - There will be a closure between Valley Crossing and Stanley's Spot Dog Park on the Decker's Creek Trail.
September 4th, 5th, 6th - There will be a closure between Valley Crossing and the bridge near the parking garage toward HRM Park on the Decker's Creek Trail.
We apologize for any inconvenience.  These temporary closures are for the safety of our trail users as we will be operating equipment and unloading materials and supplies on the trail.
