Bicycle Board Members,

Apparently, DOH is afraid to ride on their own roads.  According to the thread below, they only want to ride the rail trail for their conference.  Any thoughts now on what our role should be in the ride?  Apparently, they’re still OK with beer;)

Frank,

Please find below DOH’s comments on the Bike ride for the upcoming conference. I am not surprised that they don’t want to take the main ride up Monongahela Boulevard but at least the proposed route will show them the hill.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,

I ran this by them, and they want the route on the trails listed as the bike route.  They are just not comfortable with Mon. Blvd.  During the conference you can mention it, but it should be stressed that the trail is the main planned route for the bike ride.

Give me a call if you want to discuss this.

Thanks,

Elizabeth

Elizabeth,

Maybe the best way to handle it is to have two ride guides that lead the group through the same route until they get to Monongahela Blvd. Then one guide will take whoever chooses to go up Monongahela Blvd. and the other will lead the ride on the Rail Trail section. Riders can make that decision before the ride or when the two guides split up. If that’s ok I’ll share with the Bike Board.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,

After discussing the bike ride with Rob, Bill R., and Richard,  we would like to have the main ride be on the trail instead of Mon. Blvd.  You could mention Mon. Blvd. being an alternate route for anyone who would want to take it, but the main proposed ride should be the trail.  I don’t think they were comfortable having people ride on a busy main road up a steep hill from a liability standpoint, even if it is voluntary.

I’ll try to pick a day in April for us to come up and look at the hotel, bike ride, cookout location, etc.

Thanks,

Elizabeth

Elizabeth,

Thanks for the update. I have preliminarily lined up the site for the Picnic. It’s the pavilion at Marilla Park in Morgantown. You can visit it at the link below:

There is no charge for using the park and no need for a beer permit. The Morgantown Bicycle Board has suggested a ride that includes going up Monongahela Boulevard (this is a hot issue here), but that riders can avoid if they like, it’s a steep hill. I am attaching a description of the proposed ride and I would appreciate any comments Richard may have on the proposed route.

Also, there is bicycle rental available in the area. The cost is $10 for a two hour rental and $15 for half a day. There are 15 bicycles available and those renting them will need to provide the rental agency with their height and inseam measurement. Helmets are included in the rental.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,

I talked to Rob yesterday about the Planning Conference.  He had a few comments about some of our topics and the overall theme of the conference.  He doesn't think we ought to have Linking Planning and NEPA be the central theme for the conference since we don't do it yet.  I think it's ok if we keep some of the associated topics, but we probably ought to go with a more general theme.  Also, he didn't think we ought to do the breakout sessions just for the sake of smaller groups.  He did have a few suggestions about focus groups for the second day though.  I am out of the office today and will be off on Monday, but I'll call you on Tuesday so we can discuss this if you're available.  I'm going to re-do the notes from the last meeting to add Rob's comments and send them out to the group next week.

Have a nice weekend!

Elizabeth
